The Ozarks Trixie Camp (the one that inspired the name "Trixie Camp" for what was previous known as the "Trixie Belden Convention") has come and gone, but here is the itinerary for posterity. A link to the online (compressed) version of the 2002 Trixie Camp Memory Book can be found below.
Lodging
-
The Buffalo River Cabins, authentic Ozark Log Cabins very similar to the one Trixie and her friends stayed in while visiting Trixie's Uncle Andrew in The Mystery at Bob-White Cave. The cabins (each sleeping six people) are located just south of the Buffalo National River in Saint Joe, Arkansas.
Itinerary
Thursday, June 13, 2002
-
Check-in at the cabins is no earlier than 2 p.m.
-
An authentic Ozark dinner of smoked turkey, BBQ ribs, potato salad, corn-on-the-cob will be served at the cabins.
-
Thursday evening will be a very laid-back evening of relaxing in the cabins, exploring the hiking trails, roasting marshmallows in front of an open fire, and getting to know one another.
Friday, June 14, 2002
-
The day begins with the "Buffalo River Breakfast" (eggs, bacon, sausage, and biscuits and gravy) at
Ferguson's Country Store and Restaurant. There will be time to mosey around the store following breakfast. They even sell authentic Ozark quilts (like Linnie's!). -
After breakfast it is on to the Hurricane River Cave to do some amateur spelunking - maybe we'll even find a ghostfish or two!
-
After exploring the caves, it's on to the Tyler Bend Visitor Center right on the Buffalo National River. Here there is an access point to the crystal clear waters of the river where you can swim, fish (an Arkansas fishing license is necessary but can be purchased at our cabins), picnic, and relax. The visitor center offers an orientation, exhibits on the Buffalo National River and Ozark life, an audio-visual program, and a bookstore. A picnic lunch of Virginia ham or turkey sandwiches served with chips and a pickle spear will be provided by Ferguson's Country Store.
-
We will then head back to the cabins to relax and freshen for dinner at Lum's Mountain. Lum's Mountain has great food and entertainment—including karaoke. Think Mrs. Moore's Party! Dinner menu includes: homemade hot hush puppies, pickled green tomatoes, slow-cooked molasses baked beans, French fries, and all-you-can-eat Cajun catfish or roast beef.
-
Anyone who is interested is invited to giggle and gab around a roaring fire when we return from Lum's Mountain.
Saturday, June 15, 2002
-
We will once again enjoy a country breakfast at Ferguson's before traveling to an authentic 1890s Ozarks Village near Bull Shoals Lake. We can explore all of the completely restored buildings that exemplify a typical turn-of-the-century Ozark town.
-
Attached to the Village is the Bull Shoals Caverns, where we can once again do some more spelunking.
-
A picnic lunch will again be provided by Ferguson's and enjoyed at a picnic spot near Bull Shoals State Park.
-
After lunch we will travel to the Top O' the Ozarks Tower to view the splendid Ozark Mountains from 20 stories up.
-
Dinner will be at Gaston's Resort in Lakeview, AR, near Bull Shoals Lake on the White River. Dinner menu includes: a choice of Broiled U.S. Choice Top Sirloin, French Fried Jumbo Shrimp, Ozark Hickory Smoked BBQ Ribs (1/2 rack), Cajun Chicken Pasta, Rainbow Trout (specialty of the house), Filet of Catfish (specialty of the region) and includes soup, salad "boat" (i.e., bar), hot homemade bread and butter, and choice of baked potato, rice, or French fries.
-
Once again, you are invited to relax and unwind with Trixie friends around a campfire back at the cabins.
Sunday, June 16, 2002
-
Nothing is planned for Sunday morning except breakfast at the cabins. This is a time to explore the hiking trails near the cabins or maybe visit the Buffalo National River one last time.
-
An optional one-hour horseback ride through the trails adjacent to the cabins can be arranged if you so choose.
-
Check-out time for the lodge is 11 a.m.
